# 25H2 vs 26H2: upgrade now, wait, or stay put

> Compare Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 by build, support dates, upgrade risk and rollback. A decision page, not a feature-list recap.

**Tested on**

- Build: 26300.9457
- Edition: Pro (26H2)
- Architecture: x64
- Evidence: E1
- Verified: 2026-10-28

## The short answer

**25H2 (build 26200) and 26H2 (build 26300) are both supported annual releases.** 25H2 is not “broken” because 26H2 exists. The right choice depends on your driver list, your rollback path and how much support runway you need.

| | 25H2 | 26H2 |
|---|---|---|
| GA date | 2025-09-30 | 2026-09-29 |
| Build family | 26200.x | 26300.x |
| Home/Pro end of updates | 2027-10-12 | 2028-10-10 |
| Enterprise/Education end | 2028-10-10 | 2029-10-09 |
| Upgrade style | Annual feature update | Annual feature update |
| Best for | A known-good machine with 25H2 drivers | A new install or a machine that needs the longer runway |

## Why “newer” is not automatically “faster”

A feature update changes the OS build and the driver baseline. It does not promise a performance gain. Some workloads improve, some regress, and some are unchanged inside run-to-run noise. The honest sequence is:

1. Measure a baseline on 25H2.
2. Upgrade one machine.
3. Re-run the same workload with the same driver and settings.
4. Keep the result only if it is repeatable outside the noise band.

That is why our gaming pages separate **M-V** (VM) from **M-P** (physical) and publish ranges, not a single best score.

## Choose by situation

### Upgrade now

- The PC is new and you are doing a clean install anyway.
- Your GPU, audio, Wi-Fi and printer vendors list 26H2 packages.
- You need the extra year of support and have a snapshot/image to return to.
- You are on 24H2 Home/Pro, which is already out of updates, or on an unsupported build.

### Wait

- 25H2 is stable and the vendor has not listed 26H2 for your GPU or docking station.
- You depend on anti-cheat, a VPN client or a niche kernel driver.
- You are in the middle of a work deadline and cannot afford a rollback.
- You have no image, no snapshot and no tested recovery media.

### Stay put for now

- The device is a kiosk/appliance on LTSC 2024. LTSC is a different servicing branch; do not “upgrade” it to 26H2 to chase features.
- The hardware is below the Windows 11 floor. A build number will not fix a missing TPM or an unsupported CPU.

## Upgrade or clean install?

| Situation | Better path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Daily driver with apps and files | In-place upgrade, after image | Keeps apps and settings; rollback window is short |
| New PC or a machine with problems | Clean install | Removes inherited driver/registry debt |
| Dual boot or encrypted disk | Clean install or planned upgrade with recovery key | BitLocker and boot entries need a deliberate plan |
| Managed fleet | Pilot ring then broad deploy | One broken model is cheaper to find early |

## Rollback reality

Windows offers a limited “go back” window, typically ten days. It is not a backup. Before upgrading:

- save the BitLocker recovery key outside the machine;
- create a full image or VM snapshot;
- export the current driver versions and any vendor tuning profile;
- write down the exact build you are leaving.

If the upgrade fails after the rollback window, recovery is a reinstall or a restore, not a magic uninstall button.

## Lab note

Our 26H2 lab is **26300.9457**. We did **not** run a 25H2-to-26H2 upgrade in this lab, so this page does not claim an upgrade success rate. It is an E1 decision page with a checklist; the E2 clean-install page is the one with reproduced steps.

> If you decide to clean install, use the [26H2 clean install guide](https://winbook.fyi/en/windows/install/clean/). If you stay on 25H2, write down the support end date and revisit before the 2027 deadline.
