# Game Mode, Game Bar and fullscreen optimizations: keep, disable or ignore?

> Understand what Windows 11 Game Mode, Game Bar capture and fullscreen optimizations actually do, and how to test them without placebo.

**Tested on**

- Build: 26300.9457
- Edition: Pro (26H2)
- Architecture: x64
- Evidence: E1
- Verified: 2026-10-28

## The short answer

- **Game Mode:** generally keep it on. It prioritises the game and suppresses some background activity; it is not a performance guarantee.
- **Game Bar:** keep the overlay if you use capture/voice; disable background capture if you do not.
- **Fullscreen optimizations:** a compatibility layer, not a universal FPS switch. Change it per game only when you have a symptom.

Do not disable all three globally because a forum post said so.

## What each one does

| Feature | Job | Common side effect |
|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | Prioritise the foreground game | Little measurable effect on a clean PC |
| Game Bar | Overlay, capture, friends, performance widget | Capture/overlay can cost frames |
| Background recording | Records clips continuously | Disk/CPU/GPU overhead |
| Fullscreen optimizations | Borderless flip model / compatibility | Some old games stutter or refuse exclusive fullscreen |
| Variable refresh rate | Display sync | Needs compatible chain |

## Game Mode

Keep it on for most games. On a clean machine it usually changes little; on a busy machine it can reduce background interference. If a specific game stutters only with Game Mode, test with it off and record the result. Do not generalise one game to all.

## Game Bar and capture

The overlay itself is lightweight; **background recording** is not. If you do not capture clips:

- turn off background recording;
- close the overlay if it interferes with the game;
- keep the Game Bar app installed if you use the performance widget.

If you do capture, expect some overhead. Measure with capture on/off in the same scene.

## Fullscreen optimizations

Right-click the game exe → **Properties → Compatibility → Disable fullscreen optimizations** only when:

- the game cannot use exclusive fullscreen;
- alt-tab causes a black screen/stutter;
- the game’s own docs recommend it.

For modern DX12 games, disabling it can hurt the flip model. Test, do not cargo-cult.

## A clean test

1. Reboot and close background apps.
2. Run a repeatable scene and record 1% low, not just average.
3. Change **one** setting (Game Mode off, Game Bar capture off, fullscreen optimization off).
4. Re-run; keep the change only if the difference is outside noise.
5. Revert if it does not help.

> A single run after a reboot can look faster because the machine is idle. Use multiple runs and the same scene. If the difference is within run-to-run noise, you have not found a tweak.
